Swans on Mars!

From a correspondent, 7/15/97:

Your discovery of the native swans on Mars is quite remarkable; it first confirms the long standing suspicion that the red planet once had much water, at the same time that it demonstrates the remarkable adaptability of the swan to adverse conditions. The dusty landscape through which they romp is nearly as culturally deprived a site as the ponds of Greenwich and Darien Connecticut to which these remarkable creatures have also been able to accomodate. The other extraordinary point raised by their presence on mars is that standard life forms seem to evolve independently, and this refutes the much repeated tenet of Stephen Jay Gould that if we replayed the tape of life we would get a completely different set of creatures in existence. I have gotten very tired of hearing him repeat this constantly, as though it was really the only original idea he ever had. Its nice to see his untestable premise proved false.
